The first cooking session went off without a hitch for the volunteers at Blessed Box on Saturday.
Blessed Box co-founder Olivia Mathieson said they were overwhelmed by the kind generosity of people as they held their first cook-up at the Tokomairiro High School’s food technology rooms. The box contains a prepared family meal, cupcakes and a breastfeeding/sleep deprivation snack pack for a mother with a new baby.“We had a lovely day, so many kind people turned up to help us prepare the meals which included lasagne, nachos and soups,” Mrs Mathieson said.
Under the watchful scrutiny of cook co-ordinator Kayla Mitchell-Curd, the 17 volunteers diced onions, shredded and prepared vegetables, boiled and baked throughout the morning to prepare meal packages for new mothers in the region.“We prepared the meals for the 15 new mums referred to us and we are very grateful as a lot of the produce was kindly donated by so many helpful people and businesses in the district.“
The group are overwhelmed by the response by our supporters and volunteers and we are now working towards our next cooking session as we are trying to help as many new mums as we can,” Mrs Mathieson said.
The first six weeks postpartum can be a particularly challenging time in a mother’s life — sleep deprivation, breastfeeding challenges, hormonal, relational and environmental changes are just some of the challenges mothers experience during this time. It is more likely for a woman to experience the onset of a mental illness during the first year postpartum than any other time in her life.
Blessed Box was born out of a desire to provide better support to mothers during this time, Mrs Mathieson said.
